How often has it happened to us that we book tickets to faraway exotic locations to unwind and be in a greener environment away from the polluted and chaotic lives of the city? Many people look for these locations to calm down or relax in popular tourist destinations without being aware that such natural spots exist in their own city. To raise awareness of such natural hotspots in Ahmedabad, Asian Adventures, in collaboration with Global Wildlife Fair and Gujarat Tourism, organised an Earth walk at the Law Garden. The reason this local was selected was to divert the attention of the people towards the urban biodiversity that exists around them.
The walk started around 7:30 am. A positive message of growing environmental concern was seen among youth within the nature group. The walk began with the spotting of some common plants that we tend to ignore in our day-to-day lives. What exactly became an interesting part during these walks was the various uses of these shrubs and herbs, followed by the importance they hold in our everyday lives. Spotting the insects that had laid their eggs on the leaves and recognising them by the pattern that indicated which bird or insect had visited the tree was a fun activity that was duly enjoyed by all the participants.
The kind of adaptations these plants had made to survive in the local environment was another topic of fascination amongst the crowd. Similarly, the techniques that were used by the insects to save their eggs from predators were equally awe-strucking for the group. The law garden is often seen as a park, but through this walk, people gained a new perspective on how it was acting as an essential element in maintaining the local biodiversity. The crowd was bustling with questions toward the end of the walk. These ranged from the conservation efforts that can be taken on a personal level to protect such places to asking about the existence of more such hidden gems in the city.
