Date: 01 February 2026
Location: Jungle Lore Birding Lodge
Trail Leader:
Kundan Kumar
Trail Coordinator: Jagjeevan S. Dhami
Trail Theme: Wings of Wonder: Butterflies at Pangot

Butterflies are a natural indicator of a healthy habitat. Jungle Lore Birding Lodge has been organising a butterflies and moths exploration week to find out the variety of butterflies that are present in Pangot. Various efforts have been made from time to time to boost the butterfly population in Pangot by the lodge. It was in this backdrop that a special Earth Walk was organised, keeping in focus the butterflies of Pangot by Asian Adventures in collaboration with the Global Wildlife Fair. A group of enthusiasts met at Jungle Lore Birding Lodge at 7: 30 in the morning and headed towards the butterfly garden that has been established by the lodge itself.

The butterfly garden is within walking distance of the lodge. Upon reaching there, the walk leader explained the idea of the establishment of the garden. He explained that butterflies play a very important role in natural processes such as pollination, and therefore, it is necessary to focus on the growth of this species in the ecosystem. Since the walk was organised in the morning, the garden was bustling with different butterflies. The first one to be spotted was the Himalayan Brimstone. Here, he explained the process of metamorphosis and the complications in the transformation from the caterpillar to the Butterfly.

After spotting a beautiful Peacock Pansy, the audience started asking questions. These were regarding the reason for the distinct patterns and colours on the wings of butterflies. They even asked ‌questions regarding the host plants of the butterflies. He replied that the trees and the shrubs that are planted in the garden area are host plants for some butterflies, and hence, this location plays a key role in boosting the butterfly population in the area. Dark Clouded Yellow was one of the last butterflies to be spotted on the walk, and that's how the walk ended on a high note.

The participants found the walk interesting and enquired about the arrangement of more such walks in the region.
