Expert Birders Choose Kilbury Pangot for Unforgettable Himalayan Species Adventures

Birds of Kilbury: An Earth Walk into Himalayan Nature
Date: 25 January 2026
Location: Jungle Lore Birding Lodge
Trail Leader: Kundan Kumar
Trail Coordinator: Jagjeevan S. Dhami
Trail Theme: Kilbury Birding & Nature Walk at Pangot

The Himalayan region, which holds high religious and geographic importance, is filled with avian gems and species that would leave the one discovering them awestruck. To explore the ecosystems that exist in the lower Himalayan belt, Asian Adventures, in collaboration with Global Wildlife Fair, organised an Earth Walk to gain a new understanding of the famous Kilbury. A group of enthusiastic participants met at 8:30 am at Jungle Lore Birding Lodge. The walk leader introduced the participants to the distinct divisions of the Himalayas: the Upper Himalayas, the Middle Himalayas (also known as Himachal), and the Lower Himalayas (also known as the Shivaliks). Kilbury lies in the Shivalik region. After telling the unique features of all three areas, the focus of the discussion shifted towards Kilbury.

Kilbury, which is hardly 12km away from Nainital, feels like a whole new world in itself. A paradise for birdwatching, the place becomes a home to approximately 226 species in a year. The calmness that prevails in the region makes it an ideal escape for people who want to witness the panoramic Himalayan views, but without the tourist crowd at the hill stations. The participants were delighted to see that the trek to Kilbury was laced with dense oak and rhododendron forest. They then observed the species of plants, such as the wild cherry and the Himalayan Cypress. The walk had started at the perfect time, even to spot early morning avian gems. With the help of the walk leader, the participants could not only trace the birds, but also recognise the calling of some of the famous birds in the region.

Next, the topic shifted to the effects of seasonal variations on the types of species found in the area throughout the year. He then explained the relationship between the birdlife and the environment. The importance of a slower pace of life was also understood on this walk, as people had to wait and stand still to spot species such as the Kalij Pheasant, the  Chestnut-thrush, and the Speckled Wood-pigeon. The questions asked were not limited to birding and the best season to visit; they also touched upon deeper topics, such as the degradation of the area over the years and the conservation efforts implemented to maintain Kilbury as it is.

Overall, the walk was an immense success where people learnt Kilbury was not just an eminent birding spot but also a whole thriving ecosystem within itself.
