After the enormous success of Earth Walks in important places like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Pangot, and Ahmedabad, Asian Adventures, along with the Global Wildlife Fair, decided to expand the scope of these weekly walks, and what could have been a better location than the abode of the Asiatic Lions, Sasan Gir? As in the words of Dr Salim Ali, if it were not for the lions, Gir would have been one of the finest bird sanctuaries in Western India. With this objective in mind, the first Gir Earth Walk was organised on 10 May. The participants met at the designated location of the Gir Birding Lodge, and the walk started from here. The walk leader introduced the participants to the general landscape of the region, also throwing light on what species are expected to be encountered here. Right in the middle of this discussion, a Tickell’s Blue Flycatcher was observed, which became the first sighting of the day.

The participants had a lot of questions regarding the behavioural patterns of the birds and the survival strategy that they adopt during the warm weather of Gir. These questions were taken up one by one by the walk leader and were answered by them. It was then that the sound of a pale-billed flowerpecker caught the attention of the group, who started looking for it almost immediately. After a few minutes of standing in complete stillness, the bird emerged from the leaves it was hiding in. The participants took the best shot of the bird with their cameras. The walk leader further explained how the Mango orchard at the lodge acts like a magnet for many resident and migratory birds. Regarding the lodge's structure, discussions also occurred about its ability to support magnificent birding right outside the rooms' windows.

Right before ending the fruitful first walk, the group was lucky enough to get glimpses of the Indian Paradise Flycatcher. The walk leader then emphasised the perfect way to observe and take pictures during birding. Overall, the walk was a success, where the participants were curious to know more about the upcoming walks, stays at Gir Birding Lodge and the upcoming Global Wildlife Fair.
