26 Bird Photography Moments Captured During the Pangot Earth Walks

The avian life in the Himalayan ecosystem - A report of the Pangot Earth Walks birdwatching trail

Date: 03 May 2026
Location: Jungle Lore Birding Lodge
Walk Theme: Himalayan Trails of winged wonders
Walk Leader: Kundan Kumar
Walk Coordinator: Jagjeevan S. Dhami, Umama Mufti

As winters become a distant reality and the country moves towards summer, changes in Himalayan biodiversity are a natural phenomenon. To understand what major changes the ecosystem of Pangot goes through during this season of transition, Asian Adventures, along with the Global Wildlife Fair, organised an Earth Walk in Pangot. The enthusiastic participants met at the designated location of the Jungle Lore Birding Lodge, and the trail started from there. Pangot is a birder’s paradise, and there are many birdwatching trails, except for the popular ones, that reveal panoramic views along with a diversity of the Himalayan species. The path of this walk was one such. Right at the beginning of the walk, a greater yellow nape became the first bird to be spotted.

After clicking a few pictures of the bird, the participants started a discussion about the medicinal viability of the plants that were found during the trail. As the species kept ‌emerging on the path, the walk leader kept on explaining how these can be used in day-to-day life to treat various diseases born out of a sedentary lifestyle. In the middle of this conversation, the sound of a bird chirping was heard. Even with binoculars and cameras, tracing the bird had become almost impossible due to the thick canopy. The walk leader then joked that the founder of the bird will receive a 1000 rupee cash prize for finding it. After sharing a hearty laugh over it, the participants again started looking for the bird. At last, as the sunlight penetrated through the thick cover, a little scarlet minivet was finally spotted, and since the walk leader was the one who found it, no one was entitled to the said cash prize.

The next highlight of the walk became the spotting of the Rufous-bellied Niltava. In Pangot, the walk leader then described the birds' behavioural patterns and explained how both resident and migratory species adjust to seasonal shifts. The flora and fauna of the region play a prime role in supporting the avian diversity of the region, and the participants were amazed to know about the adaptations that these birds make in order to survive the change of seasons.

Overall, the walk was a huge success, where the participants were eager to register for more such walks. After inquiring about the details of the next one, all came together for a group picture with the Earth Walks Banner.
