The environs of the Ekana Wetlands and the avian species spotted here attracted the participants so much during our last walk that a special appeal was made to explore the region more vividly. Giving in to the plethora of requests, Asian Adventures and the Global Wildlife Fair decided to organise an Earth Walk in the given location. The participants met at the designated location, and this time the walk leader decided to start the walk differently with a small initiative.

He asked all the participant to close their eyes and listen closely to the sound of birds chirping in the area. The idea of this was to recognise the sounds of different birds and note down how many participants heard them. The participants, in pin-drop silence, heard the sounds of the birds and then added them to their bird list. Right after this exercise, one participant enquired about the changes that the wetlands have witnessed over the years.

The walk leader began to describe how the wetlands have evolved during the last 10-15 years and, most importantly, how these changes have brought about a change in the avian species, their behavioural habits and their migration patterns. The sound of a bird was heard in the middle of this conversation, and the group started looking for where the sound was originating. After searching for some 5 minutes, an eastern cattle-egret was spotted. The participants clicked pictures of the bird, and then the discussion took a turn towards the resident and migratory birds of the region. Many participants even asked what species they can expect to encounter during the upcoming seasons. The next sighting of the day was the Green Sandpiper and a pair of Pygmy Geese, which were spotted by a group of participants. The coordination, along with the collective discussion that was taking place, made the walk a truly engaging event.

The participants also asked about the other locations where Earth Walks is being organised and how they themselves can contribute to the growth of this initiative. Overall, the walk was a hit success, and the participants understood how a healthy human-nature interface can thrive in urban biodiversity and what contributions from their end can spread more awareness regarding the same. You can even become part of such initiatives and explore the hidden gems that lie in your city. Click on the link and find out what Earth Walk is organising in your city this Sunday:
