Creativity is the best way to express oneself, and art has been recognised since ancient times as a means to reflect human emotions. Keeping in mind the very idea of art, Asian Adventures and Global Wildlife Fair had organised the Delhi Earth Walk on The Art of Balance: Mandala Art. This creative workshop was organised at Sunder Nursery on November 23, 2025, and was headed by Ms Harpreet Kaur. She is a very talented artist who explored Mandala Art as a passion during the COVID times, and over the years has mastered the art ever since by understanding the psychological importance of the art form.

The workshop began with her explaining the history of Mandala Art and its importance in the Buddhist tradition. It is practised as a form of meditation by Buddhist monks. She further explained how Mandala art brings Science, Mathematics and Fine Arts on one page, as this art form requires the use of Mathematical Instruments in the beginning for formation, and eventually, as a practice of the art continues, one can make mandalas without these instruments. The art of making mandalas begins from a single point and then, via circles and pattern formation, it gains structure. Harpreet started teaching the art to the enthusiastic crowd step by step.

While the session was going on, each participant pondered the idea of the unique designs they would curate. Mandala making, despite its deep traditional ties, was being enjoyed by everyone as a fun activity that was slowly developing into an art of joy. She, along with teaching the steps, also discussed how a mandala is not just anything drawn in a circle with strokes, shapes and fillers, but it is a way of living. Initially, the participants were having problems with the creation of the mandalas. Some were struggling with the compass, while others had drawn extra lines; some were not satisfied with what they had drawn, while others were still struggling to figure out which colours to use to decorate it. This art teaches the importance of persistence, as towards the end, everyone’s piece was no less than perfect. Chanpreet even told that she had not practised this style of art ever before, even though she was one of the fastest to complete her art.

It was observed during the workshop that even though every participant was following the same steps that were given by her but each piece was different from one another, showing the importance of how the art becomes a reflection of our inner self. The participants became so engrossed in creating their pieces that perfect silence prevailed at a point in time, bringing in the idea of how this art form treated equal of meditation. The ambience of Sundar Nursery added to the subtle yet creative environment. The fact that the workshop was being carried on by sitting on the grass represented the importance of being connected to the roots. The calmness that was seen when the mandalas were being created is actually the whole essence of the workshop. Some created mandalas were small, while others were big, but the fact remains that they were getting created with fine detailing irrespective of the space assigned, hence showing the beauty of adjustment that this form of art preaches.

Ms Harpreet then gave a live example of how this art form is equivalent to meditation, as when decorating the mandalas with colours or outlines, all the participants became quiet and started focusing on their own pieces. The workshop was a huge success and ended with the display of the beautiful pieces of art that all the participants had created, and with Ms Harpreet explaining how Mandala teaches the importance of patience and brings changes in one's life. It momentarily disconnects people from the outer world and connects them to the inner world, bringing in calmness and peace that one would experience by taking photos of wildlife or roaming in the forests.
