After the massive success of Earth Walks in various regions of the country, such as Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Ahmedabad, Gir and Pangot, Asian Adventures, along with the Global Wildlife Fair, decided to increase the ambit of the walks, and Kolkata appeared as the next best destination. The night before, when the walk was supposed to take place, a thunderstorm had wreaked havoc in the region, yet the dedication and passion for birding had been such that the participants still showed up for the walk. The walk leader even appreciated this effort. Since the park had become inaccessible due to fallen trees, the walk mainly took place along the outer boundaries of the park.

The walk began with a discussion about the history of the location. The participants were amazed to hear that the origins of the park date back to the pre-independence era, when it was developed under the supervision of the Calcutta Improvement Trust. Previously, it was a land of marshy forests that had been acquired by the trust for the excavation of a lake in the middle and the development of a park around it. This area spans over 192 acres emerged as an important urban biodiversity hotspot. One participant asked if the British government was kind enough to give it a name after an Indian poet back then. The group laughed at this jibe, and then the walk leader told them that the original name of the location was Bompass Lake, which was changed to Dhakuria Lake and finally was renamed as the Rabindra Sarobar in 1958 by the Calcutta Improvement Trust.

During this intriguing conversation, the first sighting of the morning was made, which was the Lineated Barbet. The leaves fresh from the downpour last night acted as a perfect backdrop for the bird, and the participants left no stone unturned to capture its perfect images. Right then, a black-hooded oriole emerged and captured everyone’s attention. After having an engaging photography session, the participants asked for ways from the walk leader to enhance their photography. The walk leader, after addressing their questions, told them about the International Wildlife Photography Competition that is being organised by the Global Wildlife Fair. He explained that the participants would not only get to showcase their work but also get to interact with the experts from the field of photography from all around the world. With this discussion and the shared tea session, the walk ended on a high note, where the participants wanted to know more about the details of the upcoming walks.
