Butterflies of Delhi: Species, Biodiversity and Guided Nature Walk
Butterflies can be considered one of the most beautiful creations, and that they are equally appreciated by the masses, too, is where their tragedy begins. They are appreciated, but hardly any substantial efforts have been made in the recent past for their conservation. The first step towards conserving them begins with spreading awareness about them amongst the masses, which means to make people aware that every butterfly is not just “Oh, that's a butterfly with blue or white wings”, but to inculcate this understanding in them that these are living creatures that contribute majorly to the biodiversity we are a part of. To make people aware that each of them is unique in their own sense, like us, and how they signify the overall well-being of the environment around us. They aren't just species that contribute towards the process of pollination in the ecosystem, but also act as bio-indicators in the environment. The presence of butterflies is a sign that the area has less pollution, and the absence of them contributes to high levels of pollution.

Keeping the same notion in mind, it would be widely assumed that places like Delhi would have a paucity of these species, but fortunately, this is not the case. Due to some places still having rich biodiversity, butterflies are still a common feature in Delhi. These are the biodiversity parks in and around Delhi. Asian Adventures, with the same spirit of spreading awareness about butterflies amongst the masses, has been conducting Butterfly walks for quite some years now. These walks have largely been a huge success amongst the masses, where people have shown great interest in understanding the life cycle and species of butterflies that are still available in Delhi. The major walks that have been organised by Asian Adventures are

Through these walks, Asian Adventures has been able to establish it as a weekly norm, wherein people visit and leave with an ample amount of information about butterflies. The most common species of butterflies that were found around Delhi were
- Mottled Emigrant
- Small Salmon Arab
- Striped Albatross
- Common Leopard
- Peacock Pansy
- Common Mormon Swallowtail

- Lime Swallowtail
- Little Tiger Blue
- Gram Blue
- Common Castor Butterfly
- Rice Swift
- Common Grass Yellow
- Common Jay
- Zebra Blue
- Small Cupid
- Plains Cupid
- Striped Tiger
- Small Branded Swift
- Pea Blue
- Lemon Emigrant
- Lemon Pansy
- Plain Tiger Butterfly
- Danaid Eggfly

A majority of these butterflies were observed during our walk to Nehar Sahibi. The arena was rich in diverse species of butterflies, and crucially contributes to the population of butterflies in the state. Delhi still has a huge variety of butterflies left, but if the pollution keeps increasing the way it is doing in the state, then that day is not far away when these too go extinct and hence a small initiative of joining us for our weekly walks can not just bring about a difference in your perspective but of the whole situation of butterflies in the state.
