The hidden gems of Gir - A report of the Gir Earth Walks birdwatching trail
Date: 17 May 2026
Location: Gir Birding Lodge
Walk Leader: Amit Ram
Walk Theme: Nature and Earth Walks at Gir Birding Lodge
Walk Co-ordinator: Ramesh

Even though the land of Sasan Gir is famous for being home to the Asiatic Lions, that does not mean the area is not rich in avian diversity. Asian Adventures, along with Global Wildlife Fair and Gujarat Tourism, organised an Earth Walk to discover the avian species that decorate the region. The participants met at the designated location, Gir Birding Lodge, where the walk had to begin. Beginning the walk, the leader detailed the land's history and the evolution of its bird species in response to landscape shifts in the landscape. The participants then started asking questions regarding what the unique species are in the region, and if there are specific locations where the birds and other unique species can be spotted. The walk leader appreciated the enthusiasm he could see amongst the participants and said all the due questions would be answered one by one on the walk.
With this spirit, the walk began. The trail was a simple route that could have been covered by people from all age groups, and that made the walk more immersive. The natural flow gave more time to the participants to observe and focus on what is around them. A beautiful purple sunbird basking in the early rays of the summer sun became the first sighting of the day. The way it was perfectly sitting on the branch gave the participants ample time to click the best shots of the bird. That was just the beginning of the birding extravaganza, and the flying shot of the tickell’s blue-flycatcher was a sight of pure bliss for the participants; many even claimed that it became a perfect souvenir of Gujarat for them. Winding down the trail, the next spotting became that of a red-wattled lapwing that had stopped in one of the minor water bodies and was refreshing itself.

With these experiences and shared laughter on various misconceptions that people have about birds, the walk ended. The participants were excited to be a part of more such adventures and one-on-one immersive experiences in the wild. You can even join such experiences and make your encounters with nature exciting as well as informative. Why plan extensive trips when gems are present right around you?
