Discover 35 Bird Species with Gir Earth Walks in Sasan Gir
What’s beyond the safari? - A report of the birdwatching trail held at the Gir Birding Lodge
Date: 14 June 2026
Location: Gir Birding Lodge
Walk Theme: Hidden Wings of Gir Birding Lodge
Walk Leader: Amit Ram
Walk Coordinator: Vairagi Laltesh

The successful conduct of Gir Earth Walks led to a request from the participants for a walk exploring places around Gir Birding Lodge that have not yet caught the public’s eye. Keeping in mind the same vision, Asian Adventures, in collaboration with Global Wildlife Fair and Gujarat Tourism, organised an Earth Walk in the region. The participants met at the designated location despite the scorching summer heat, and that served as the perfect motivation for the walk leader and coordinator to lead the group. Right at the start of the walk, the group came across the Red-wattled lapwing, and the walk leader explained the breeding season and the plumage patterns of the bird. When the participants heard the name of the bird that they would be expected to encounter, they were definitely excited.
The yellow-footed green pigeon was the next species to be spotted, which made the group wonder how it differed from the rest of the pigeons or how many types of pigeons there were, and most importantly, how many of them can be spotted in Sasan Gir. These questions were subsequently asked, and the walk leader eventually answered these questions as the walk proceeded. It was when the Indian Robin was spotted that more questions started rolling in. These were questions such as do birds change their colour according to the seasons? What is the nesting season? Does it differ for different birds? And how does breeding in different seasons happen? All these questions were taken up in a one-on-one method by the walk leader, who answered them.

He also explained that nesting or the walk a species makes to make their nest differs from one bird to another, the style of making a nest would be different for a sunbird, while that of making a nest for a tailorbird would be different. To clarify their doubts further, the walk coordinator even showed them the nest and the techniques that these birds used to make these nests online, and it was explained that to remain updated on such information, the Gir Birding Lodge Instagram page is the perfect handle. The group followed the page almost immediately to not miss out on any updates. If you want to experience Sasan Gir as a complete experience in itself, follow our Instagram handle to remain updated with the experiences, sales and offers never heard before: https://www.instagram.com/gir_birding_lodge_gujarat
Overall, the walk was a success, where the group learnt not only about the lesser-known trails around the lodge, but also got to learn a lot about the species of the region.
